This walk starts and finishes at Kielder Waterside, formally known as the Leaplish park. It's a bit longer than our usual walks at 6.5 miles but the Bull Crag Peninsular walk is well worth the effort. The tracks are mainly good, and apart from 1 short section you hardly need hiking boots. The walk takes you along the shore of Kielder water and back through the forest, on what is a largely flat route. Kielder Water, the largest human-made lake in Northern Europe, is the centrepiece of Kielder Forest Park, England's largest working forest. A stroll along its tranquil banks is hugely rewarding, while at night it boasts some of the darkest skies in the country. The nearby Kielder Observatory, which opened in 2008, takes advantage of this fact. There is lots to see on the walk apart from the stunning views. If you are lucky you may see red squirrels, Stone chats, Gold crests and other birds if you know what you are looking for. There are also the Kielder keepsakes to watch out for, you may wish to take your brass rubbing kit for those, not to mention numerous other things. This walk really does have something for everyone. And of course there is a great cafe/pub at the start and finish point!
