Multiweight oil's Vs straight weight oil's Straight weight oil contains NO viscosity improvers! What is a viscosity improver? By nature and as you would expect the oil will want to become thicker when its cold and thinner as it heats up. As the engines became more complex and the demands on the lubricants increased the chemists and engineers got together and came up with something they could add to the oil to cause it to become thinner when it was cold so it would pump easily and thicker as it got hot so it could maintain viscosity to provide protection. They came up with viscosity improvers or VI. You can image them as being very thin long stings when they are cold so they can flow easily without doing much, but as you heat them up they begin to coil and in turn begin to take up more space effectively causing the oil to have a thicker consistency. Thickens under temperature and thins out when its cold, so the definition of a multigrade oil mean that this oil can perform with varying viscosity under different conditions meaning the product contains viscosity improvers and the definition of a straight weight oil means the product has no viscosity improvers. Base stocks and Viscosity Improvers, Regards the Winter rating (pour-ability when cold) When you begin to get colder in petroleum base oil the waxes in the oil will begin to crystallize which makes the oil thicker and thicker until the point it looks like a snow cone. To combat this they use what is called pour point suppressants to prevent the wax from crystallizing to a certain point. BUT if you use a high grade synthetic oil or a hydrocrack oil which has had all that wax removed it will allow you to go to a much lower temperature as they have pretty good cold pumping abilities. A PAO oil on the other hand has NO impurities in it whatsoever and it will operate at just about any temperature you wold need it too. So if I take the KCK gear oil it is listed as a straight 90w, this product in this oil are that good that it meets and exceed the test for 80w90 with no viscosity improvers at all. Now why would that be beneficial? Now I told you how the viscosity improvers are long polymers that wind up when they get hot and in extreme conditions, these viscosity improvers can be broken and if they become broken this is what’s called shear back. We have seen this with poor engine oils where the turbo chargers were shearing the viscosity improvers and the engines would promptly blow up because they were trying to run on a 10w oil. Now the viscosity improvers are a much better quality now but you can see the benefit in running very little or no viscosity improvers to still meet the operation range of our oils. Example - if there was a failure of some sort that caused the viscosity improvers to shear back for some reason you would still be left with an oil that meets the specifications you need and your engine won’t blow up. If you shear back a petroleum base oil it will become a very thin oil. So if your oil only requires little to no viscosity improves because your base stocks are so well made then that will be a better oil. A quick caution, if you see a 5w50 or something like that that has such a wide range you have had to fill that oil with some many viscosity improvers it has impaired its ability to lubricate and will break down very quickly. https://kcklubricants.com/ KCK Lubricants has been developing and refining its range of oil products since 1982, many top level Motorsport teams have used and still use KCK’s products with great success in a wide variety of Motorsport disciplines.
