Exploring The Abandoned Eastney Swimming Pool In Southsea Where A World Famous Game Was Invented!

Eastney Swimming Pool in Southsea, Portsmouth, was built in 1904 on the site of an old gravel pit, as part of the Eastney Royal Marine Barracks when it served purely as a training and recreational facility for Royal Marines, It was used to train the Cockleshell Heroes - 13 Royal Marine commandos - ahead of their secret mission in six canoes to Bordeaux in December 1942. Maj Herbert "Blondie" Hasler and Cpl Bill Sparks (pictured in 1966) were the only two survivors from that mission…. Another claim to fame is that Eastney Swimming Pool is where the very first games of Underwater Hockey, or Octopush as it is often known, were played in 1954 The council closed the pool in 2020 following the outbreak of Covid and locals claim officials “left it to rot”.
