35mm 4K film scan Today is FT Depot’s two year anniversary! This channel debuted on April 1, 2020 and this marks the 731st upload of a random and occasionally interesting film scanned in-house at our facility. Despite it being “April Fool’s Day”, today’s upload is no joke because today's film is a "lost" film! From 1969 to 1984, Shelton Productions created amusement park films for Chevrolet that ran exclusively at various Six Flags amusement parks. Although the film format was standard 4-perf 35mm anamorphic film with a 4-track magnetic soundtrack, it was branded as “Cinema 110”. The films were shown in a facility referred to as “The Chevy Show Theater” or “The Cinesphere Chevy Show Theater”. This dome-shaped building projected these films using very short throw lenses onto an almost-too-large-for-the-room curved screen that filled the viewer’s vision, making it so the image filled the viewer’s peripheral vision. The intention was to make the viewer feel like they were in the middle of the action, and for those of us who experienced it, the effect worked. Each film had a running time of about 15 minutes, and the film would be run 3 times an hour. The venue had no good way to clean the film, so as you can imagine the prints got pretty worn from being projected and then hastily rewound 3 times every single hour. If you do the math, that means on days the park was open from morning until late night, the films were subject to being projected more than 300 times a week. That’s more than 1200 times each month. And the park was open for several months out of the year! As the films would get chewed and damaged to the point of having to be replaced, the old prints would be shipped back where they would be cut up and multiple damaged prints would be spliced together to “create” a complete copy to send out to the next park that needed a replacement. For this reason by the end of the season the prints that were running would typically have lots of splices in them from all of the replacement footage often taken from other damaged prints. Physical film damage from so many passes were very much a reality, such as torn sprockets, various scratches and dirt deeply embedded into the emulsion. Even the audio quality would vary greatly between clips, depending on how worn the mag tracks got. In some cases the audio would get partially erased due to the projector heads not being kept demagnetized and magnetic audio "ticking" (evident in parts of this one) was somewhat common. Today’s print is no different. The actual print has plenty of splices, scratches, embedded dirt, audio defects and of course is unevenly faded almost totally red. With that being said, today’s film scan is a lot more involved than our usual daily offering to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of our channel. The end result is not perfect by any means, but given the worn and chopped up print we had to work with, other than a few intermittent scratches that were beyond ability to conceal, we feel this represents as close as possible how the print looked when it was new before it got run to near-death. Shelton Productions shuttered their doors in 2001 and Joseph Shelton passed in 2003. However during a personal quest to find these films in the 1990s it was learned that the original elements were destroyed. According to the producer’s knowledge, no prints or any kind of video transfer survived of any of them. If anyone should know of the whereabouts of any of the other “Chevy Shows” (other prints or any possible lab elements that somehow survived), PLEASE drop me an email at the business address on the “about” page of our YouTube channel. I do have other year’s Chevy Shows to scan and share, but it will take time as my staff and I are extremely busy at the moment with our regular daily workload and this was a special case transfer for our anniversary celebration. The others will be posted in time, but hopefully someone seeing this will know where other prints might be tucked away that could be useful for our Chevy Show restoration projects. So today we are pleased to present to you a film that has been considered “lost” and has not been seen in 43 YEARS! We are uploading this scan in 4K and have preserved the original 4-track audio mix in a 5.1 layout. We ask that you watch it on your biggest screen (meaning please not your phone).
