Members of the public gathered at Toronto City Hall to mark the second anniversary of the release of Missing and Missed – Report of The Independent Civilian Review into Missing Person Investigations. The community engagement event included progress reports on the implementation of Missing and Missed recommendations and the plan going forward. Members of the public spoke directly with Missing and Missed Implementation Team (MMIT) community representatives and police representatives. Attendees heard from TPSB member Lisa Kostakis, Judge Gloria Epstein, Chief Myron Demkiw, Inspector General Ryan Teschner, and MMIT Co-Chairs Haran Vijayanathan and Staff Superintendent Pauline Gray. Watch the speeches from the formal portion of the event on the Toronto Police You Tube channel. “As we mark the second anniversary of the release of Missing and Missed, I remain fully committed to supporting the Missing and Missed Implementation Team and to implementing the 151 recommendations outlined in Judge Epstein’s report,” said Chief of Police Myron Demkiw. "This crucial work is helping us address systemic issues that led to inexcusable shortcomings that disproportionately affected 2SLGBTQ+ and other vulnerable and marginalized communities. We will continue to take action to better serve our communities by ensuring effective implementation of these recommendations through public and transparent processes to sustain meaningful change over the long-term.” To date, 119 of the recommendations are in progress, 24 are implemented and eight have not yet started. Some of the highlights from the implemented recommendations include: Missing and Missed Implementation webpage and dashboard Expansion of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit Expansion of the Neighbourhood Community Officer Program Changes to public information released about missing persons Funding for Governance and Oversight Major Case Management training and education Establishment of a Missing Person Awareness Day on February 6
