The Champions Trophy is back after a gap of eight years and is all set to kick off in Karachi. There were many doubts regarding the completion of stadium renovations and India’s participation, but Pakistan has overcome these hurdles and achieved what they wanted. India will not be traveling to Pakistan and will play all of their games at a neutral venue in Dubai. Pakistan, who are the defending champions, will host New Zealand in the curtain raiser in a Group A encounter at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday (February 19). The top eight sides in the world have been divided into two groups. All the teams will play three matches and the top two teams from both groups will advance to the semi-finals. India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh are in Group A while Australia, South Africa, Afghanistan and England are in Group B. If India manage to reach the semis, one semi-final will be moved out of Pakistan and held in Dubai. The same scenario applies for the final. This will be the second meeting in a week for Pakistan and New Zealand. They had met at the same venue in a Tri-series final, which the hosts lost. Pakistan suffered an injury blow just before the Champions Trophy as the dynamic opening batter Saim Ayub was ruled out due to an injury. He broke his right ankle during the South Africa tour. The title holders recalled Fakhar Zaman to replace him at the top of the order. Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah and Saud Shakeel were recalled into the mix. Haris Rauf suffered an injury (muscular sprain in the lower chest wall) in the recently concluded Tri-series but has been named in the final squad. Initial reports from Pakistan Cricket Board suggest that he should be fine for the big tournament. He has been bowling with full tilt in the nets and looking ready to go. Pakistan's usual pace attack will be in action, with the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah as the likely starters, along with the lone spinner they've picked, Abrar Ahmed. Babar Azam and Fakhar will open the innings. There will be a toss-up between Kamran Ghulam and Saud Shakeel for the number three slot. Captain Mohammad Rizwan will bat at four and then the man in form Agha Salman. Rizwan, on the eve of the tournament opener, said that Haris Rauf is fit and available for selection for the match against New Zealand.
