Hello, my name is Kyle McCain, creator of this project. SPITFIRE came from a simple idea: there is no time to wait for something to happen. You have to do the thing, keep doing it, and see where it leads. Sometimes that place is nowhere. Sometimes it’s something you never expected. During my A&R internship, I reached out to Kevin Basko (Rubber Band Gun) for a brief interview. I’d been a fan of his work for years and didn’t expect much. Surprisingly, he responded and was more than willing to talk. I left that conversation fascinated by his approach to songwriting and recording. The nonchalance. The instinct. The manic wizardry. Rubber Band Gun doesn’t overthink. You shoot that bitch until you’re out of ammo, then reload. Big ideas come fast, and instead of resisting them, he lets them live and shapes them just enough. I knew I had to document that process. The problem was simple: I didn’t own a camera and had no idea how to use one. So I borrowed my grandmother-in-law’s Canon, bought a GoPro, and asked Kevin if he’d be down to let me film him making an album in a single weekend. Once again, he was surprisingly down. I reached out to an old friend, Lucas VanWinkle, to see if he’d help edit the project. We hadn’t worked together before, and I hadn’t seen much of his work, but I trusted his taste and outlook. He said yes. I booked an Airbnb, bought a plane ticket, and showed up in Philadelphia to film Kevin recording an entire album in three days. This film is the result of that leap. Ladies and gentlemen, this is SPITFIRE.
