In this video I speak with Michael Gravenson who owns a store here in Alameda on Webster street called Arkea, where he specializes in Clothing alterations, repair and custom work. We touch on Sustainability and how to make clothing last longer. Here is a little more about Michael in his own words: "I come from a background of having very little and every article of clothing mattering and serving a specific purpose. Growing up I would wear something until it was completely unusable while doing rudimentary repairs to try to prolog its lifespan. Now with the knowledge of fashion design I can predict the wear patterns and potential fail points of any garment. With this in mind I can prevent severe damage from accruing and continue the mission of less fabric waste. With my personal background of Up-cycling and Repair and educational background garment construction and alteration combined, this led to the formation of Arkea Tailor shop. Arkea Tailor shop is a denim up-cycling repair and alteration company. The name is derived from the scientific name Archaea which is an organism that can survive in extreme conditions. To me this symbolizes the idea of perseverance, applying that to clothing it manifested in the act of not wasting quality fabrics while promoting slow fashion, breathing new life into previously discarded garments. The core of Arkea is practical wear which encapsulates three major beliefs. One Taking discarded fabrics to “recon-textile” them into a fully bespoke garment tailored to your personal atheistic. Two With proper care and diligent repair a quality garment should last a lifetime. Three You shouldn’t have to work to fit your clothes, I will work to make your clothes fit you." Arkea is located at: 1604 Webster St, Alameda, CA 94501 His website is: https://www.arkea.shop/ and the best way to get in touch is via email: [email protected] We have a Free guide to Jobs in Fashion when you sign up for our newsletter: https://www.TheSewingRoomAlameda.com/...
