Ulnar neuropathy is a condition caused by irritation or compression of the ulnar nerve, most commonly at the elbow—a condition often referred to as cubital tunnel syndrome. The ulnar nerve is responsible for sensation in the ring and pinky fingers and controls many of the small muscles in the hand. Symptoms typically include numbness, tingling, or a “falling asleep” sensation in the hand, especially when the elbow is bent for long periods. In more advanced cases, individuals may experience hand weakness, loss of coordination, or muscle wasting in the fingers. Diagnosis involves a combination of clinical evaluation and nerve conduction studies. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and may include activity modification, splinting, anti-inflammatory strategies, or surgical decompression if the nerve remains compressed or function declines. Early recognition and proper treatment are important to prevent permanent nerve damage and restore function.
