You never know what you can handle until you are put in the worst position in life like the one Spencer Waldron (https://substack.com/profile/60064081...) shares on this episode of Between sips. He tells a story of how his son was in accident that nearly took his life! About a week before we recorded this talk, I saw Spencer for an event we both were attending. When he shared how he was doing there were so many things he had said that I thought it would be an inspiring story to showcase here on Between Sips. Although, hearing about his son’s accident was not great what I did hear from Spencer in this journey of dealing with this crisis was a lot of things we could all use in our daily lives. Things like: Discovering what resiliency is and what it is not. He realized that it is not something you are born with but actually something you can build upon. Creating space for his emotions. Spencer shares a vulnerable way he dealt with his heaviest emotions, not by pushing them away, but giving them a time and place to process them in his way. Managing expectations of others. Very early on Spencer created a way to keep people updated without fielding thousands of inquiries about his son. This later became a way to review how he was managing through it as well as a diary of sorts for his son who was unconscious for the first two weeks. Using a metaphor he read years before to gage his ability to handle something: River vs. Boat problems. Something that Spencer said that was really powerful was this, “Resilience isn’t about being strong. It’s about continuing, even when you’re a complete mess.” I have to say immediately following this interview I used some of his examples in my own life. It felt helpful to find ways to weave in this way of looking at how life can be managed through tough emotions and difficulties. I believe in this day and age we all are, whether we are aware of it or not, using resiliency maybe subconsciously. What I believe Spencer offers us in this talk is a way to be more conscious with it. Another thing that occurred to me after this recording was how much I value hearing other people’s stories. I feel like I heal a little more, feel more connected and understand that we all have times that are hard but by listening to each others stories we can learn something and feel less alone in it. I want to do more of this. I will be creating more opportunities for more guests soon. If you aren’t already a subscriber please join to find out how you can be a guest on Between Sips.
