Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., spoke Tuesday in support of defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military. Waltz, an Army veteran, praised Hegseth's "character of country, his selflessness, his duty," saying "these are the key tenets that have shaped him into the leader that he is today." "I have no doubt that he is going to get the Pentagon back to its primary mission, lethal readiness," Waltz said. "That warrior ethos is what our enemies will respect that warrior ethos is what our enemies will fear, and it's that warrior ethos that will keep the peace. " "In my humble opinion, our military deserves better than it's getting," Waltz said, adding "It is time for change." Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage.
