It lets you focus more on composition and depth of field, which is important when you are only starting off. Aperture Priority is a mode in your camera that will let you adjust the aperture of the camera, and the shutter speed will be adjusted automatically in order to get the proper exposure. This will let you focus more on composition and depth of field, and worry less about getting the right settings in order to get the proper exposure. The exposure can then be adjusted using exposure compensation to either increase or decrease the exposure that the camera gives you.
