The dawning of the twentieth century brought changes to Caldwell County. Granite Falls was growing, as was Lenoir, the county seat. Hudson was incorporated into a town. The lumber industry led to the creation of the towns of Mortimer and Grandin. The growth of the furniture and textile industry caused some county residents to leave their farms for the towns. The coming of the automobile underscored the need for better roads and bridges which joined with the railroad in making the county more accessible. Businesses were established to meet the needs of the growing population. Amid the prosperity and optimism, tragedy struck. The flood of 1916 brought destruction of property and lives. Caldwell men went to the Great War and some made the supreme sacrifice. The flu epidemic of 1918 took its toll in lives as well. As the 1920's approached, Caldwell County was on the verge of becoming a leading manufacturing center for furniture not only in North Carolina but for the entire nation. The future looked bright.
