The Isthmus Track is a beautiful day walk out from Hawea and Wanaka. At the top you get beautiful 360 degree views of both lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. It’s often thought of as an alternative to Roy’s peak in Wanaka. Many told me it’s much more satisfying to walk than Roy’s Peak but Roy’s peak gets the Insta- worthy photo. I carried 5 lyre of water because I’ve decided to stay overnight and walk the Isthmus Ridge trail as well. Saw some deer- Amazing. I was told that deer like to be at “the tops” above treeline when they “in velvet” because it’s quite painful for them to brush against trees.
