Volhynia Massacre: Revenge on Ukrainians Who Killed 100,000 Poles

Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Starting in early 1943, the UPA launched this brutal campaign to remove Poles from Volhynia. The goal was nothing else than an ethnic cleansing of the territory. The attacks began village by village. The goal was clear: to drive out or kill all Poles so that only Ukrainians would remain in the lands. The violence reached terrible levels in villages like Ostrówki, Wola Ostrowiecka and Kisielin. In Ostrówki, on the 30th of August 1943, about 438 Poles were killed in a single day. Among the victims were 246 children under the age of 14. The UPA fighters often attacked early in the morning. They surrounded the villages, set buildings on fire, and killed families as they ran out. Churches became death traps. When the UPA soldiers left Wola Ostrowiecka, 529 people were left dead, and 79 families were wiped out. A similar murder happened in the village of Kisielin on the 11th of July 1943 when about 90 Poles were murdered when attackers locked people inside the church. Men, women, and children were ordered to take off their clothes, and were then massacred by machine gun. The wounded were killed with weapons such as axes and knives on the spot, and without mercy.
