Around midday, we reached the capital Phnom Penh of the Kingdom of Cambodia by speedboat from Vietnam. Phnom Penh has been the capital since 1866 and is currently home to 2.3 million people. In recent years, Phnom Penh has undergone an astonishing transformation to become a cosmopolitan city. People want to live and achieve prosperity. The city has remained manageable and combines the chaotic life of a big city with the tranquillity of the farmers who live in the surrounding area and sell their produce at the many markets. Among other things, we visit the Royal Palace, the golden roofs of the buildings can be seen from afar, glistening in the glistening sun. The complex was built in the Khmer style on the site of older buildings at the end of the 19th century under French rule. The silver pagoda is particularly worth seeing. It takes its name from the 5329 solid silver bricks that make up the floor. It also houses the most important Buddha statue in the country, made of 90 kilograms of pure gold and set with over 9500 diamonds, including a 25-carat diamond. The National Museum is also located in the centre of the city, an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the country's history. The next stop was a central market in Phnom Penh, an opportunity to sample a wide variety of fruit and food under expert guidance. In the centre of the city is Wat Phnom, a small hill with a stupa on top. Yeah Penh is said to have had this hill built around 1372 to honour four Buddha statues found in the Mekong River. King Ponhea Yat later founded the city and gave it the name Phnom Penh. Mrs Penh is still worshipped today, and the king's ashes are also kept here.
