The Transfiguration has a feast day in August and a Sunday at the end of the series of “light” Sundays that is begun with Epiphany. Three disciples are gathered together with Jesus when they see the Transfiguration. Jesus summons on us on a journey to follow God up a high mountain. This is the journey of every Christian, just at the Transfiguration. Jesus took the apostles on the journey so that they might pray. It is more than an exchange of words: it is an exchange of persons. We look at ourselves and others with the loving eyes of God. The clouds that descend remind us to prayer, which is shrouded in mystery. Prayer is ultimately about listening to God and discerning what he asks of us. “The glory of God is the human person fully alive.” In prayer we are able to experience Jesus to the full. We are changed, transfigured, from the inside out. Unlike the Pharisees, who wanted to change from the outside inward by being observant. In Communion/Eucharist we leave our homes and come to be transformed. Through the eucharist we are changed from within. And we are told to go and tell people what we have experienced in God. In the Thus Transfiguration is really the start of our Lenten Journey and the light of Transfiguration is linked to the cross. Readings: Exodus 24:12-18 Psalm 2 2 Peter 1:16-21 Matthew 17:1-9
