Despite it being a rough start, I had a great trip to San Diego. I saw my grandmother and played some volleyball. Now for some fast facts about San Diego Into Airport, formerly known as Lindbergh Field, named after aviator Charles Lindbergh. San Diego Airport Authority changed the name to simply San Diego International Airport in 2003 because “Lindbergh Field” sounded too regional, as San Diego was becoming a major international gateway already by that point. San Diego is a hub for Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines. While Alaska Airlines has the most destinations of any airline in San Diego, with 40-49 nonstop routes, Southwest Airlines has the most daily flights out of any airline that flies through SAN at almost 4,000. Alaska Airlines operates within Terminal 2. Terminal 2, built in 1972 underwent a big renovation project and opened in phases during 2013-2014. Southwest Airlines operates in Terminal 1. Terminal 1, built in 1967, is currently undergoing a $3.8 billion renovation project to modernize it and make it more environmentally sustainable. The new state of the art project is opening in phases and will have 30 gates. The first phase opened in September 2025 and has 19 new gates. The final 11 gates is slated to be completed in 2028.
