As part of the European Mental Health Week, which is running from 9 - 13 May 2022, MHE is releasing a video to shine the light on youth mental health. It's been a long couple of years, and Covid has been hard, for all of us. We’ve missed out on school, missed out on seeing our friends, missed out on our childhoods. Our lives changed in unsettling ways. This has been hard on our mental wellbeing. It’s time for us to speak up. Mental health problems amongst 15 to 24 year olds doubled during the pandemic, with over 9 million adolescents now living with poor mental health in Europe. And the longer-term effects of the pandemic on mental health won’t be felt equally. Those facing pre-existing barriers to good mental health will be hit the hardest. That is why we need European and national governments to invest in adequate prevention, to invest in mental health literacy and include mental health in the education system, so we can understand more about our own mental wellbeing. We need to empower each other to admit when we are not doing well, and realise it's okay to not be okay. And we need targeted support at every stage in our lives, so we can all shine and reach our potential. Youth mental health affects us all. From our parents, our carers, our families, to our teachers and friends. Everyone has a part to play. We need to shine a light on mental health to break the stigma. Supporting the individual to speak up will make it easier for us all to get the help we need. Half of the mental health problems affecting adults start during adolescence. The time is now to prevent, empower, and support. We are the next generation. Our mental health matters. Together we can speak up and shape a brighter future. Starting now.
