What happens when 15 strangers gather for a transformative 2-week intensive Contact Improvisation (CI) workshop on Lasqueti Island, BC? Led by Mark Young at Leviathan Studio and guest instructor Lilianna Kane, this off-grid experience blends nature, movement, and community in a truly unique setting. Produced by June Flash, the teaser showcases the immersive and meditative journey into CI as an art form. Contact improvisation (CI) is a unique, improvisational dance form that explores spontaneous movement through shared touch, momentum, and gravity. Initiated in 1972 by American choreographer Steve Paxton, CI developed as a postmodern dance practice grounded in open, physical connection and trust between dancers. The form was influenced by experimental techniques and philosophies, including those from artists like Nancy Stark Smith, who helped expand CI internationally through teaching and publication. Today, CI workshops and intensives are popular worldwide, known for fostering creativity, adaptability, and a deep sense of body awareness. This collaborative dance form has become a foundation in contemporary dance, focusing on fluid movement and connection with others—a practice that enriches both seasoned dancers and beginners alike. Mark Young, an influential figure in the contact improvisation (CI) community, has dedicated years to teaching and hosting intensive CI workshops on Lasqueti Island, British Columbia, at his hand-built Leviathan Studio. Initially, he discovered CI after a life-changing bike accident in Vancouver at age 32, which left him with severe injuries. Using Tai Chi and CI as rehabilitation methods, Young defied medical expectations by restoring his mobility and channeling this experience into his work. With a commitment to organic living, he created an immersive experience for dancers worldwide, merging CI practice with the natural, off-grid environment on Lasqueti. His workshops are a testament to his dedication to CI, self-reliance, and sustainable living.
