I am excited about the license granted by the National Universities Commission(NUC) for the commencement of the degree in medicine and surgery at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). It is a great feat for us. It is a programme we started pursuing about ten years ago and by 2021 we got that approval. Not only the approval, but it may also interest you to know that we have done the post UTME examination for the candidates. 2,100 candidates applied and the University only offered a place for 45 candidates. That is a great one. The Akure community has played a tremendous role in the FUTA project. As you know that the Federal University of Technology Akure is established in Akure, which is the domain of the kingdom of the Akure people. From the onset, the Akure community has been very hospitable about the development of our University. They provided the land, human resources and political goodwill to ensure and fast track development of the University. The Deji of Akure in particular, the Imperial Majesty Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, has played substantial roles since he became the Oba. He was able to procure for us the Certificate of Occupancy. Now, the Federal government allocated 10 hectares for the establishment of the permanent site of FUTA. Over the years, the University has struggled to gain access to the land. But the Deji was so magnanimous in relating to the state government and he was able to hand over the C of O of 200, hectares for the establishment of the College of Medicine to us. Apart from getting the C of O, Deji of Akure in particular has shown a lot of interest in the college of medicine and teaching hospital. In 2018 when the Vice President of the country, Prof. Yemi Osibajo visit Akure, the issue of the teaching hospital was one of the key points the Deji of Akure discussed with him and the Vice President told him that there is a place for political goodwill to work for it. The Deji now set up a committee of great people, great minds and that committee has done a tremendous job. I could remember in 2019 that the committee and the FUTA team visited the Vice President in Abuja. Since then, it has been one achievement after the other. Deji was instrumental in getting the perimeter fencing for the university to commence and a committee has also been set up to attract funds from Akure indigenes within the country and in the diaspora. I met with that committee and a parcel of land has also be given to them to start moulding blocks. So, Deji has done tremendous work in the commencement of the college of medicine and the teaching hospital. The University lost some money in 2011. About N2.1 billion was allocated to the university for the college of medicine but unfortunately mopped up in 2016 December. There is a great move to get the money restored to the university. The Deji of Akure has set up a committee to attract funds for the development of some aspects of the teaching hospital, moulding of blocks for the outlay. Construction has started. A committee has been reaching out to individuals who have indicated an interest in taking different aspects of the construction work. A master plan for the site has been developed. That is the first stage. We have spaces for different sections, units of the college of medicine and the teaching hospital. As I am talking, construction work has started on the aspect of the basic medical sciences. We have a three-storey building that we have started some months ago and by the grace of God, we would soon complete that aspect. There are other aspects of the college of medicine and teaching hospital. We have the basic medical sciences which have started. The students would come on board in October this year but the construction of their permanent site has started. We have the pre-clinical, clinical and then we have the teaching hospital section.
