During our stay with Davidoff, there was great emphasis on the blend and the need for yearly consistency. As Klaas Kelner regularly talked about blending, we created this video so that you could understand why premium cigars are blended. The blenders will also work with ring gauges of between 52 and 54. Most blends are created based on briefs sent from headquarters in Switzerland. As the expert blenders intimately know the varieties of tobacco that they work with, they usually have a good idea beforehand on how to use these ingredients to create the perfect experience. Once a blend has been determined, the key is to ensure consistency so that every cigar of that blend will taste the same. This is a challenge faced by cigar manufacturers every season as the harvested tobacco may change after every harvest. Depending on the climate, the tobacco may be thick or thin and contain different levels of nicotine and aromatic compounds. As such, the blend is adjusted using different proportions of its ingredients. In some extreme scenarios, the blenders may even use different primings on the plant. However, this originally had its own issues. Originally, there were only three priming categories (Volado, Seco, Ligero). Therefore, Henke Kelner decided to create a new priming, which he called the Visus so that their categorisation was more precise. Once the season's blend has been determined, the tobacco varieties distributed into 40 Oz (1.13 kg) bulks for the rollers. These will typically be able to provide enough tobacco for 40 cigars. However, this largely depends on the year and its climates as the leaves' weight can fluctuate. The number of cigars that the bundles of tobacco will produce is calculate, which is used as an additional quality control. If too few or too many cigars are produced, then it means that there is problem such as the cigars being too tightly or too loosely packed. Not only did we have the opportunity to discuss this with Henke Kelner but we were also able to discuss it with Eladio Diaz, Davidoff's Master Blender. Afterwards, Klaas showed us a display with all of Davidoff's tobacco varieties to compare their aromas and textures. Highlights included Nicaraguan Ometepe, Dominican San Vicente and Pilot, as well as the famous Yamasa.
