HOW IT'S MADE: Trucks Step One: Designing The Truck The foremost element initiating the process of manufacture is the design of the truck. Since these locomotives play a crucial role in heavy-load transportation, appropriately designing them is the first step towards making. It is basically bearing the frame of the vehicle. The design is generally altered after 5 to 7 years with the inclusion of the latest developments in the field of technology and materials. The truck manufacturers figure out the requirements of the customers in shaping out a new model. Hence, the role of customers is vital too! While designing the latest models, they start with a clay replica of the truck for the overall styling. The completion of this stage involves the creation of a prototype cab along with a hood. The created prototype is then put to road testing. The designing team is expected to possess several other models as backup plans in case the prototype fails in the road testing round. Step Two: Frame Rail Assembling Rail frames are the structural framework for vehicles. Also known as chassis, they form the foundation material of the vehicle upon which other parts are attached to prepare the entire vehicle. One needs to understand that without this critical support structure, the heavier parts will not be able to gain proper and sturdy balance. Once the design of the truck is ready, the manufacturing team moves on to select the perfect rail frame from the structural channel or C-channel. These are arranged one after the other and drilled to create holes. These holes connect the frame with its parts. The entire process is automated with the help of an automatic drill machine and a computer assistant. The frame rails are fixed with all the equipment required for fixing the brakes and electricals inside the truck. The two frame rails left and right formed are made to stand opposite to each other in the form of a ladder. Brackets are carved out to attach cross members which give solid support to the entire structure. The chassis is assembled with the help of pneumatic tools specifically geared towards large-scale production. Step Three: Axles And Suspensions Installation The next step is installing the axles and suspensions in proper places. During this stage, the configuration and installation of mechanical parts, including the differential and the axle take place. Hubs are required for attaching the wheels. In this stage of manufacturing the truck, both front and rear axles are fitted with these hubs. A further installation is done whereby the axles are fitted with the brakes and brake drums. Since semi-trucks are heavy-weight vehicles, they need to have a well-developed suspension system to manage the bumping of the truck and provide a comfortable ride. Accordingly, a well-built suspension system is produced by clamping the axles with the suspensions using long-length u-bolts. The entire thing is then lifted to attach within the frame of the suspension brackets. Suspensions usually accompany high-quality leaf springs. However, some even possess rubber-made airbags. The setting being prepared has to be fixed with shock absorbers to absorb compressions liable to come upon the suspensions time and again. Step Four: Wheel Assembly And Mounting Procedures The wheel assembly is also completed to ensure that proper and smooth brakes are in place. During this process, the manufacturers make sure that the mounting procedures go as per the set designed specifications. The assembly is done upside down with a crane that can lift up a humongous weight that you can not imagine at the moment. Now, slowly and steadily the construct right-side is flipped up. At separate workstations, the engine and transmission portions of the assembly are completed. The engine and transmission are simultaneously placed into the plant alongside the assembly line. Were you aware that presently, most of the trucks use diesel engines? The alternator, fan, and various other required engine parts are installed and connected with the help of hoses and electrical wiring. Step Five: Cab Assembly As reiterated earlier, the cab is an important component in a semi-truck. During this stage, the process of cab assembly takes place. Here, activities such as painting, interior installation, and desired placement onto the chassis are undertaken and completed. The surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and the areas that are not supposed to be painted are masked off with paper or tape. Also, batteries are securely and safely placed in the battery box, however, are not connected to avoid accidental sparking. For those who do not know, semi-trucks use polished stainless steel for bright finishes along with molded plastics for complex shapes. #howitsmade #howtheydoit #Engineering
