If your pump is cycling too frequently or giving you inconsistent performance, it could be time to adjust the pressure switch. Today, we’ll be taking a look at how to dial in the perfect range and differential to keep your system running right. When you adjust the pressure range on a switch like this Telemechanique sixty-forty, you’re changing two specific set points: the cut-in pressure, or the point of low pressure that turns the pump on; and the cut-out pressure, or the point of high pressure that turns the pump off. Before adjusting anything, make sure to shut off the power to your switch. To adjust the pressure range, turn the larger nut clockwise in increase the cut-in and cut-out pressures, and counterclockwise to lower the cut-in and -out pressures. Generally speaking, one full turn will adjust the pressure by two to three P-S-I. For example, if you give the main nut two turns clockwise, the pressure range will increase from forty-sixty to about forty-five sixty-five. Try to adjust only as needed – not too aggressively – and always use a pressure gauge to check if you have the right pressure setting dialed in. You can also adjust the differential using the smaller nut. Turn the nut clockwise to raise cut out pressure only and counterclockwise to lower cut out pressure only. For example, two clockwise turns of the smaller nut would change the pressure range from forty sixty to roughly forty sixty-five, changing the differential from twenty to twenty-five. Note: there are very few cases that call for adjusting the differential. A differential that’s too wide could lead to extreme pressure fluctuations, and a differential that’s too narrow could lead to short cycling, so it’s usually best to consult with a professional on what’s best based on the equipment and application.
