One of the most iconic tech photos of all time almost never happened. Steve Jobs originally didn't want his famous photo taken of him. Before the shoot, the photographer was warned by Steve's PR person, “I just want to let you know Steve hates photographers.” The photographer really wanted to make Steve happy. He said, “Mr. Jobs, I have some good news for you. I believe I have you for an hour.” Steve said, “You do.” He said, “I think I can get this done in half an hour.” Steve's face lit up. “He just looked at me like I'd given him a Christmas present or something. He said, ‘Oh my God, that would be great.’ He said, ‘I’ve got so much to do today.’” The photographer said, “I need you to imagine you're across a table from four or five people who don't agree with you, but you know you're right.” Steve said, “Perfect! I do that every day.” Steve leaned forward, looked intensely, put his thumb on his chin, then gave this subtle confident smile. Two photos were taken. It took 20 minutes. The second photo was the iconic one. When Steve was leaving, he asked to take the Polaroid. He told the photographer, that's maybe the best picture ever taken of me. The photographer thought he was just being polite. Years later, Apple called. Urgently, they said, “We need that photo you took of Steve. Do you still have it?” The photographer sent the photo immediately. Not long after, the photographer gets a notification on his iPhone. “Up on my phone came he had died that afternoon. That photo was there on the website. So he did like it in the end.” #stevejobs #startups #technology
