Documentary „The Return of the Junkers F13“ Storyline The world’s first passenger aircraft flies again Mid-september 2016, the time has come: a unique piece of technical heritage from aviation history, the first airworthy Junkers F13, the ‘mother’ of all commercial aircraft launches for her official first flight. History The JU52, affectionately known as ‘Aunt JU’, is famous around the world, but very few people know that in 1919 the great pioneer in aviation Hugo Junkers revolutionised flying with his F13, an all-metal aircraft made from grooved Duralumin. The Junkers F13 broke the flight altitude record as well as the world record for flight duration and connected people and continents for the first time. It is now set to repeat history. Initiators In collaboration with the Association of Friends of Historical Aircraft and JU-Air from Switzerland the Rimowa Flugzeugwerke AG implemented the project: the idea originated in 2009, 2010 the worldwide research in libraries, archives and museums started, while not only original documents were rolled, but also a detailed 3D laser scan of an original F13 happened. After three years, in 2013, the construction – done by one of the youngest aircraft manufacturer based in the Black Forest, Germany – could begin. Construction project The team that built the RIMOWA F13 put in a total of 9.000 working hours. The plane consists of 2.600 individual parts and is held together by 35.000 rivets. The aircraft can accommodate four passengers in an enclosed cabin. The crew consists of a pilot and a mechanic, both of whom sit in an open cockpit. World premiere at the world’s biggest air show – EEA AirVenture in Oshkosh On the evening of 20 July 2015, the exact replica of the original Junkers F13 was unveiled at a special ceremony. The Gala-guests witnessed this return on a journey through time into the Roaring Twenties and the beginnings of modern aviation. The next day, an extraordinary get-together took place: the world’s first passenger aircraft, the Junkers F13, met the world’s most modern passenger aircraft, the new A350. A wingspan of 15 metres and 1.5 tonnes versus a 65-metre wingspread and a weight of more than 110 tonnes. A piece of aircraft history meets the future of aviation. Finalising After returning from the USA, in autumn 2015, the team started to work on technical details like aircraft controls, fuel supplies, electrical wiring and avionics. At the same time the project manager documents work and components in order to provide the necessary supporting evidence to the Swiss Aviation Authority. If the final flight test program in August 2016 succeeds, nothing else should be standing in the way between the approval and the first flight-event. Maiden Flight-Event Mid September 2016, the F13 will start her first official maiden flight in her new home in Dübendorf, Switzerland. Aircraft-Experts from all over the world, VIP-guests and even a former F13-passenger and the grandson of aviation pioneer Hugo Junkers are invited to be there when a piece of aviation history returns. copyright: ah-tv film und fernsehproduktion Korschenbroich 2017
