In this video, I play Pac‑Man from Level 255 into the legendary Level 256 — the famous “kill screen.” If you’ve ever wondered why the right side of the maze turns into a wall of garbage pixels, here’s the real story. Pac‑Man was written in 1980, and the game stores the level number in an 8‑bit counter. The highest value an 8‑bit number can hold is 255. When you reach Level 256, the counter overflows back to zero, and Pac‑Man tries to draw the fruit table using corrupted memory. That overflow fills the right side of the maze with random tiles, broken walls, and unreadable graphics. Because half the dots are hidden inside the corrupted area, the level becomes impossible to finish — which is why Level 256 is known as Pac‑Man’s kill screen. For me, this level is more than just a glitch. When I was a kid in 1980, me and my friends would ride our bikes to 7‑Eleven just to play Pac‑Man. We didn’t know all the patterns, and we definitely didn’t have enough quarters to master the game. Reaching Level 256 felt like something only legends could do. I always dreamed that one day I’d finally get there. It took a long time, but this was one of those things I felt I had to do — a piece of unfinished business from my childhood. Today, I finally reach Level 256 in Pac‑Man. Thanks for watching and sharing this moment with me.
