FRANCE: ST ETIENNE: FANS CLASH WITH POLICE AFTER ENGLAND DEFEAT

(1 Jul 1998) Natural Sound Clashes between fans and police broke out in the Northern French city of St Etienne following England's 4-3 defeat on penalties by Argentina in the World Cup. With around 1-thousand-600 police patrolling the city the disturbances were kept to a minimum and there was little serious violence. The scuffles were concentrated in the main square where ticketless England fans had congregated during the game and where a number of the bars had remained open. Some disgruntled England fans, fueled with alcohol served in the local bars, vented their anger and disappointment on opposing Argentinian fans. But most English fans reportedly walked out of the stadium in Saint-Etienne in a sombre mood, too depressed to cause trouble. There were a few brawls and minor scuffles, with local youths breaking shop windows and damaging cars, but the night passed in relative peace. Residents of St Etienne were relieved that the fighting was nothing like the extreme violence that surrounded England's match with Tunisia two weeks ago.
