Street fight continues STORYLINE The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began in Pakistan on Thursday, two days later than in many other parts of the Muslim world after religious scholars sighted the new moon. Muslims believe God began to reveal the Quran, the Islamic holy book, to the prophet Muhammad more than 14-hundred years ago during Ramadan. For the coming four weeks, Muslims are expected to abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex during daylight hours to focus on spiritual introspection. Along with fasting, many Muslims spend long periods in mosques and attempt to read the entire Quran during the month. Towards dusk on Thursday, shoppers flocked to street stalls to buy treats to eat after sunset, when fasting stops for the evening. Dates, pakoras and samosas proved popular with shoppers in the market, though many complained of rising prices. Economists say inflation in Pakistan is currently over 10 percent. Ramadan is supposed to be a time of quiet prayer, but traders in the northern city of Rawalpindi on Thursday were prepared to fight for space to sell their Ramadan food items. Some shoppers feared the situation could worsen as Ramadan continues. State-run media reported on Thursday that President General Pervez Musharraf had asked authorities to enforce a check on price rises. Thursday also marked the third and final phase of municipal elections in Pakistan. Thousands of community leaders voted to choose district and town mayors across the country. The councillors, chosen in a two-phase election process in August, voted to fill mayoral seats in the country's 108 districts, with 426 candidates running for district mayors' seats and 388 others for town mayors.
