Euthyphro – In a graveyard. Graveyard symbolises the end of something, and the beginning of something new. Inspired by Plato’s Euthyphro, this film questions whether respect should be given automatically — or earned through virtue. Too often, we value appearance, status, or habit over kindness, presence, and care. Should respect belong to titles, age, or authority? Or should it belong to those who act with empathy and responsibility? In the moments that matter most, what we do reveals what we truly value. For instance: • Should preserving tidy net curtains justify harming a neighbour’s cat? • Should someone who ignores the wellbeing of a community still expect the respect of that community? • Should friendship depend on status rather than kindness? • Should a parent deserve automatic, pious respect if that parent is racist, sexist, homophobic, disinterested, and toxic? • If a group of people consistently acts out of selfishness, resentment, or indifference, should that group continue to be called a family - or merely a collection of individuals bound by habit and history? These are not questions about age, wealth, or position. They are questions about virtue. Respect is often treated as something owed automatically - to elders, to parents, to people with titles or authority. Yet respect without virtue risks becoming nothing more than obedience to status. If someone consistently harms others, disregards the wellbeing of their community, or treats people with prejudice, should their position alone shield them from moral judgment? A healthy community depends on mutual care. When individuals place their own pride, appearance, or status above the wellbeing of others, the social fabric begins to fray. Can a community truly thrive if its members ignore the wellbeing of others, including the welfare of other animals? Respect that is grounded in virtue - kindness, fairness, responsibility, and empathy - strengthens communities.
