Welcome back to Vast Sky Media! Santa Anita Park, a historic thoroughbred racetrack in California’s San Gabriel Valley, traces its roots to 1875 when Elias "Lucky" Baldwin acquired Rancho Santa Anita. Baldwin opened the original racetrack on Thanksgiving Day 1907, but it closed in 1909 after his death and California’s anti-gambling Walker-Otis Law. The track burned down in 1912. Legalized pari-mutuel wagering in 1933 paved the way for the current Santa Anita Park, founded by Charles H. Strub and Hal Roach and designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in Art Deco style, opening on Christmas Day 1934. The track introduced the Santa Anita Handicap in 1935, the first U.S. race with a $100,000 purse, and pioneered electrical timing. Seabiscuit’s 1940 Handicap victory marked a defining moment. During World War II (1942-1945), the site served as a Japanese American internment camp. In 1950, the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award was established to honor exemplary riders. Santa Anita hosted equestrian events for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and is set to do so again in 2028. A record 85,527 attendees filled the park on Santa Anita Handicap Day in 1985. Named to America’s “Most Endangered Historic Places” list in 2000, it was deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The track experimented with a synthetic Cushion Track from 2007 to 2010 before returning to dirt. The Stronach Group took ownership in 2011, ending the Oak Tree Racing Association’s fall meet. Santa Anita hosted the Breeders’ Cup consecutively from 2012 to 2014 and a record ninth time in 2016. The 2024-2025 Classic Meet saw $510 million in wagers, with improved attendance and safety.
