Let's take a closer look at Instacart including how the service works. Over this past weekend, I finally joined the 21st century and placed my first Instacart order. If you’re not familiar, this service allows you to order groceries and other items from participating stores and have them delivered right to your door — something that’s proving especially impactful at the time that I’m recording this video in April 2020. So how does Instacart work and is it worth it? Let’s take a look at what you need to know about the service. The first things to know about Instacart are the fees associated with the service and how the optional Instacart Express membership can impact them As you’d probably expect, getting your groceries delivered with Instacart will mean spending a bit more. Specifically, regular users will incur delivery fees and service fees in addition to tipping their shoppers. Plus, Instacart notes that some grocers may set their prices higher than in-store, but you can check a location's pricing policy by tapping “more info” in the app. For delivery fees, the amount you pay will depend on the size of your order, the store you choose, and the current demand. Personally, I’ve seen fees as low as $3.99 and as high as $8.99. On top of that, the service fee is equal to 5% of your order, with a minimum fee $2. Greater service fees may also apply to alcohol deliveries, with these surcharges ranging from $2 to $10. If you’re a frequent Instacart user, then their Instacart Express service may be a good investment. For $9.99 a month or $99 for a year when paid upfront, Instacart Express customers will enjoy no Delivery Fees on orders over $35 as well as reduced service fees. Regardless of how much you pay in fees, don’t forget to tip your shoppers as well — especially during these hectic times. Next, depending on your location, there may be several stores that support Instacart, including some surprising choices While the stores offering Instacart delivery may vary by where you live, some of the options in my area currently include Hy-vee, Aldi, CVS, Target, Petco, and more. Plus Sam’s Club is also offered, and notably doesn’t require you to be a member in order to get deliveries through Instacart. That said, if you are a Sam’s Club, you can add your member number to your profile in order to take advantage of member-only pricing and more. As you look for items to add to your cart, you can also tap on some products to view more information about them. If you’re looking for items you don’t typically shop for, it’s nice to know that Instacart allows you to view nutritional information for certain selections by tapping the product in your search. There, you’ll also find some helpful metrics such as the price per ounce. But, if you’d rather just add an item quickly, you can skip this step and simply tap the plus button in the top right corner of the item listing. With demand currently increasing, Instacart recently introduced some new features to supplement their normal two-hour delivery window options. When I placed my first-ever Instacart order this week, I was extremely lucky as my order arrived less than an hour after I placed it. But, from what I’ve heard, this isn’t the case nationwide. Normally, Instacart allows users to select a two-hour window in which their order will be delivered. However, with these slots now getting increasingly hard to come by, Instacart has added two new features. The first is their Fast and Flexible option that will see your order fulfilled as soon as there’s an available shopper, although you won’t know what time that will be. Additionally, the company has expanded their scheduling to allow users to view slots up to two weeks in advance for deliveries. By the way, when you’re viewing available slots, Instacart will show you what the delivery fee will be for each, so that you can make the best decision for your budget and needs. Finally, one of my favorite aspects of Instacart is how you can keep track of your shopper’s progress and communicate with them in the event that items on your list are out of stock. Before I submitted my order, I was slightly worried that my order might arrive incomplete or with the wrong items as sometimes happens with food delivery. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I could actually see what items my shopper had already picked up and communicate with them in the event that a substitution needed to happen. Sure enough, some of the items on my list were out of stock so my shopper messaged with potential alternatives.
