The River Stort Catchment Partnership (RSCP) and Waterside Bishop Stortford (WBS) Group were brought together by Whoosh Explore Canoe Club for Invasive Species Week. Volunteers from across a number of different organisations (and some non-affiliated folk) got together to help remove Himalayan Balsam from the River Stort. It was my pleasure to join as a Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust representative and film the team as well as get my own chance to steer the canoe back! I hope the film shows just how much effort goes into a day like this. Boats are readied, volunteers walk or paddle down the river focusing on removing as much balsam as possible with a short break for lunch and then on return, boats need to be thoroughly cleaned to ensure no balsam is accidentally carried to another location. We always welcome more local community groups who want to join on the towpath in future invasive species removal days. Please contact us! Some organisations involved include: Canal & River Trust, Angling Trust, British Canoeing, Environment Agency, Stort Valley Angling Club and Thames Water.
