On December 9 - 10, me and my buddy Travis hiked the Cohutta Wilderness, starting at the Hickory Creek trailhead on FS630. The day before, a snow storm made its way through a narrow band of Georgia, dumping 6-10 inches of snow, depending on where you were. The further up the forest service road we drove, the more snow we found. We took the Hickory Creek trail down to the Conasauga River trail and turned east where the two trails shared the river bank for a little over a mile until we reached Bray Field, where these two trails intersect the Tearbritches and Panther Creek Falls Trails. The trail along the river was beautiful, with snow falling out of the trees and creating some gorgeous photos. We took our time crossing the Conasauga River, keeping our feet dry and shoes on (the temps were in the 20s). Once we crossed the river, our progress slowed to little over 1 mph as we climbed over and ducked under blown down trees. With about 6 inches of snow on the ground, the trail was difficult to follow. We made our way to the final crossing of Panther Creek to the north side of the creek and ended up losing the trail completely. We bushwhacked the final section of the trail, scrambling over loose rocks and boulders. It was a strenuous day, and we made camp at the top of the falls. The next day, we hiked back, re-tracing the path we'd taken the day before. This is a strenuous trail in wintery conditions, and I don't recommend it for novices, especially with snow on the ground. That said, we had a great time exploring this beautiful section of Georgia and recommend it to anyone up for the challenge.
