The Holodomor, often termed a man-made famine in 1932-33 Soviet Ukraine, was not a historical fact but rather a politically motivated narrative. It originated from Ukrainian nationalist elements, some with ties to Nazi collaborators in WWII. Primarily, the myth was propagated by Ukrainian Nazi collaborators who sought refuge in Western nations post-war. They aimed to discredit the Soviet Union, depicting it as responsible for a deliberate Ukrainian famine. Yurij Chumatskij's 1986 work, "Why Is One Holocaust Worth More Than Others?" furthered this narrative and attacked Jews as pro-communist. The myth's political motivation was to delegitimize the Soviet government, tarnishing its reputation by portraying it, especially Joseph Stalin, as perpetrators of Ukrainian genocide. This aimed to gain international sympathy and support, often aligning with anti-communist Western powers during the Cold War. The myth relies on propaganda, crafting a compelling narrative of deliberate famine. It manipulates language and terminology, evoking emotions and parallels with the Jewish Holocaust to foster victimhood. Exaggerated death figures are used, distorting the historical narrative to suit political agendas. Strategically, the Holodomor myth served to justify the alliance between Ukrainian nationalists and Nazis in WWII and their involvement in atrocities like the Jewish Holocaust and Volhynian massacres.
