This video uses the E. T. Hoffmann story “The Sandman” to explore the psychological effects of memory and trauma. The divided self refers to the psychological difficulties human beings experience as they find themselves relating to both an external world and their internal consciousness. I argue that mental illness stems from the divided self as we sometimes struggle to align the internal and external parts of our experience with the added complications that our memory brings. Hoffmann’s story of The Sandman is shown to prefigure in fictional form the work of psychologists like Freud and Lacan and various artworks are used throughout the talk to demonstrate further the relationship between art and the psychology of consciousness.
