Space security emerged as a common theme throughout the keynote remarks during the first day of the GEOINT 2024 Symposium in Kissimmee, Florida. The first Main Stage keynote address was delivered by The Honorable Stacey Dixon, Ph.D., Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence on May 6th, 2024. Dr. Dixon talks about the importance of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) and the need for international cooperation to ensure the safety and security of space. Dr. Dixon's key points include: The definition of GEOINT has been expanded to include "identifying the geographic locations and characteristics of natural or constructed features and boundaries on or about the Earth, in other words from seabed to space." [1] There increasing number of satellites and debris in space could lead to disastrous collisions. [2] International cooperation is needed to develop norms and standards for the use of space to promote safety and security. [2] The United States is committed to the peaceful use of space and has proposed a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that reaffirms this commitment. [3] Trust is essential in the intelligence community and steps must be taken to safeguard privacy and civil liberties. [4] Commercial GEOINT is a valuable asset and needs to be integrated with government intelligence. [5] We need to be prepared for the increasing use of misinformation and disinformation. [6] American companies need to be mindful of who they are selling their products to so that they do not fall into the hands of adversaries. [7] Dr. Dixon concludes her speech by encouraging the audience to join GEOINT working groups and to help steer the future of the discipline. [8]
