Jordanian flags flying on Zahran street STORYLINE: As Jordan gears up to a royal wedding later this week, preparations are underway at Zahran Palace, the venue for the highly anticipated event. This palace in Amman has been picked as the venue that will host the June 1 wedding of Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, heir to the throne, and Rajwa Khalid Alseif, a Saudi architect. The Zahran Palace, which in the center of the Jordanian capital, was built in the 1950s and "is like the family home," says Muntaha al-Abdallat, a retired royal court historian. "Continuing to have these celebrations at the Zahran Palace specifically symbolizes the continuity of the Hashemite royal traditions and customs," al-Abdallat adds. The crown prince’s parents, King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, got married at this palace in 1993. Crown Prince Hussein is the eldest son of ruling King Abdullah II. The late King Hussein, the crown prince’s grandfather, married his second wife, the British-born Antoinette Gardiner, at the same palace in 1961. Gardiner, who is King Abdullah II’s mother, is known as Princess Muna and remained in Jordan after the couple divorced a decade later. After both weddings in 1961 and 1993, the royal couple were driven around the streets of Amman in cream colored convertibles accompanied by a motorcade of red Land Rover jeeps and BMW motorcycles. Al-Abdallat said similar arrangements are expected on Thursday. The upcoming royal wedding is expected to draw dignitaries from around the world including First Lady Jill Biden. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
