Dieffenbachia is a gorgeous plant with a penchant for mischief: her nickname, Dumb Cane, comes from the strange effects of her sap, which can cause temporary loss of speech if ingested. Yikes. It's all good though - unless you're drinking her through a straw, she's totally safe to have around and can add an incredible pop of colour to your space. LIKES: Dieffenbachia is happiest in medium light, as too much bright light will scorch her leaves. Try putting her near an east- or west-facing window. DISLIKES: She will be happiest an average home temperatures (15-27 degrees) and doesn't do well in the cold. Keep her away from cool drafts. HEALTH BENEFITS: She also works hard as an air purifier, mopping up all the nasties in the air so you can breathe easy. WATERING AND FEEDING: Water her regularly, but allow the top two-three inches of soil to dry out before giving her a shower. To check if she's thirsty, just stick your finger in the top of her compost; if it comes out dry, then it's time to give her a drink. LIVING WITH PETS AND CHILDREN: Mildly toxic to pets and people.
