Just inland from the Coast, the festive town of Coquille sits on the river it was named for and offers year-round river fun. Coquille takes its name from the Indian tribe who lived in villages nearby the winding river. In the 1850s the town evolved into a timber center with sailing ships towed upriver, loaded with lumber for the markets in San Francisco. Riverboats were the preferred method of transportation for locals and travelers, and coal and creameries soon joined timber to grow the town and its economy. The river is still a huge draw for the community, with fabulous fishing and boating not to mention hiking and biking. Coquille also boasts the chance to ride the rails courtesy of the Oregon Coast Railriders, the Coquille Valley Museum, the Sawdust Theater, and the you-have-to-come-see-it-to-believe-it “Gay 90’s” festival the first Saturday in June.
