This statement sparked a global campaign called “war on drugs”, aimed at eradicating the production and supply of illicit drugs. Since then, numerous reports have revealed that the US “war on drugs” campaign has racist origins, and the Nixon administration used it to target the African Americans and the Hispanic population. Five decades have passed since this campaign, and studies show that this campaign miserably failed to address the problem of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. We still live in a world that does not see drug abuse as a public health issue but merely as a criminal offence, and the results of this approach have been devastating.
