Since Bee Kong had me on his "The Next Level" livestream on April 8th, a handful of folks have been asking me questions about different tips and tricks that I use. It has also been a while since I uploaded a game play video, so here you go. It is hard for me to talk and play at the same time, so I keep the chatter to a minimum while I am playing. If you want to see the replay of this episode of "The Next Level" (and watch me stammer away - haha), you can watch it here: • Tips on How to "Git Gud": PinballFX3, Spac... Some random thoughts from this particular effort: 1. You can't allow yourself to get ruffled if you get hit or make a mistake. I've had games where I would get completely mad at myself for screwing up - and my already-sloppy play gets even worse. For a game like Star Wars (this also applies to Tempest as well), there is a very slim margin for error. Losing more than two shields for multiple waves will end your game quickly. 2. Speaking of mistakes, I screwed up the tower formations for Waves 11 and 12 in this video. I very rarely miss getting all of the towers nowadays, and that sometimes becomes a major distraction - which has the potential of breaking my focus. As I mentioned during Bee's show and in different comments, you only have room to mess up once or twice during the tower stage, especially Wave 11. It gets even more fun starting Wave 20, when the Wave 11 tower tops increase to THIRTY-TWO. 3. A couple people asked me how I remember where the tower tops appear. You just remember where they appear after playing this game a bunch of times. I pretty much have a set flying pattern for all of the tower formations (including the second time they appear with four extra tower tops), but I still mess up once in a while - usually Waves 11 and 12. Wave 12 is actually the Wave 3 tower tops with four extra, but since I have been playing on the "Hard" setting since the 80's, I had to relearn where the tower tops appear. 4. Starting Wave 12, the barrier formations start appearing in random order. Learning how to navigate the different trench patterns is key. I got lucky with the trench formations for Waves 12 and 13. The barrier formation in the beginning of the Wave 14 trench run still gives me problems half of the time and it repeated TWICE - which finally ended my fun. If I can get better with navigating the tricky formations, I may actually be able to challenge the high scores I set in my cabinet. 5. For the curious, the high scores in my cabinet were achieved with the game settings on 9 shields with 3 bonus. Most of them were with the stock yoke, and a couple are with the GRS yoke. The purpose of playing on that setting was to work on my flight patterns for the towers and barrier formations. I left the scores in place, because I want to give myself something to shoot for with the "default" arcade setting of 6 shields with 1 bonus. And for the critics, I reached those scores by clearing the tower tops over 90% of the time and "Using the Force" 100% of the time. I reached Wave 80 for my 22 million game, which took me over 3 hours. If you aren't aiming for the high-risk bonuses (50,000 for clearing the tower tops and 100,000 for Using the Force), you would have to clear almost twice as many waves as I did. 6. I don't consider myself to be an expert at this game, but I am aiming to get better. As a point of comparison, the world record solo score is over 300 million points. I've read statements from the real experts advising against "using the Force" all of the time, and I've watched high-level players on YouTube reach over 50 million with the default arcade settings. I actually play worse if I shoot away in the trench. That is probably one of the things that is holding me back from becoming really great at this game. :-P
