There are several fibrous joints that connect the bones in an infant’s skull. These joints are called sutures. When the sutures close too early, they can cause problems with brain and skull growth. Michael was born with sagittal synostosis. Sagittal synostosis happens when the sagittal suture in an infant’s skull closes too soon. Sagittal synostosis is the most common type of craniosynostosis. In 2013, Michael came to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for surgery so that his skull and brain would have room to grow and develop. Michael has fully recovered and is now back to being a happy toddler. The surgeons at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta understand how to treat babies with craniosynostosis.
