Are we alone in the Universe? Whenever we look at the stars, the question seems inevitable. But before searching for life beyond Earth, we must first ask: what exactly is life? In this video, we explore different scientific definitions of life — physiological, metabolic, and biomolecular — and examine whether Earth’s “recipe,” based on carbon, water, and DNA, is truly the only possible one. 🌌 Could life exist: Without water? Based on silicon instead of carbon? Using ammonia or methane as a solvent? With mirror biochemistry (opposite chirality)? Adapted to stars different from our Sun? Drawing from classic and contemporary astrobiology research (Davies, Kiang, Schulze-Makuch, Venturolli), we discuss the fundamental requirements for life: chemical complexity, an external energy source, and a liquid medium for reactions to occur. And we leave you with a crucial question: 👉 Would we be able to recognize life if it were fundamentally different from us? Based on a lecture by Prof. Dr. Luís Gustavo Galego Department of Biological Sciences – UFTM (Brazil)
