ANIMAL SIDEKICKS || What are they good for and How to write GREAT ones in your story

Growing up I’ve always been the person who cares more when the animal dies than the person. Animal sidekicks have always been my connection to the story and I’ve always been drawn to them. I never really thought about why they would be used from a technical standpoint until recently when I decided to start researching for this video. A lot of stories might have worked out better for the main character if their sidekick was a person like them, rather than an animal. So why do authors and writers put in animal sidekicks if it’s going to make A) the character’s life that much harder and B) the writer have to keep track of an animal and how it affects the other characters in the story? It can be both a lot more work to write an animal sidekick and a lot less depending on the scene, so lets figure them out.
