The early 1970’s were plagued with gasoline shortages and spiking prices. Because of the situation, all manufacturers were seeking solutions by designing smaller fuel efficient cars. The Pacer design was started in 1971 by famed designer Richard A. Teague. The Project was named “Project Amigo”. The first car was introduced in 1975. Car & Driver dubbed it “Flying Fishbowl”, another name was George Jetson’s car due to its unusual shape. The Pacer was originally engineered to use a Wankel rotary engine. When that agreement failed, AMC used their High Output 258 CI 6 Cylinder motor. Even though AMC failed, they built several innovative and iconic vehicles, this being one. Several movie producers called upon the Pacer, Wayne’s World being the most notable. That car painted bright blue with flames sold at Barrett-Jackson in 2016 for $37,000. Even though produced in in 1976, this car was sold to Wayne Crim on 6-7-77. The most unusual aspect of this car was the fact that it was delivered with 19 options! (See window sticker). Cost with options was comparable to a Cadillac! $5,685.00. Because of the Gas scare, AMC installed a special ratio positive traction rear axle of 2:53!!! This is a 2 owner car with original mileage of 46,795 miles. As you can see, it has been impeccably maintained. Recent maintenance include all fluids have been replaced. The brakes and master cylinder have been replaced including all wheel cylinders. A tune up has been performed and the car drives wonderful. The AC had some charge but needed a “top-off”. After locating 2 cans of R-12, the AC was charged and it performs beautifully. This car has 19 options from the factory making it extremely rare. Some of the rarest options are the leather interior, Rallye Package, Rallye sport mag wheels, and 2.53 rear gear ratio. This Pacer would be a great gift to any collection.
