Later, we step inside Mottisfont House itself: a fascinating patchwork of history. Originally founded as an Augustinian priory in 1201, the house still reveals its medieval roots. Highlights include the atmospheric White Bedroom, a surprising crocodile story, changing art exhibitions inspired by Maud Russell, and the unforgettable Whistler Room — painted with trompe l’oeil murals by Rex Whistler that trick the eye into seeing carved stone.
