Enjoy the beautiful sounds of the dawn chorus on International Dawn Chorus Day 2025! In the rainforests of Borneo, the dawn chorus starts about an hour before dawn. Most other daytime species are still asleep, but there is a stir in the several groups of primates that inhabit these hills. Soon enough one of them starts a tentative song. As soon as those first few notes are uttered, another gibbon answers from the tree nearby. In a few seconds the whole forest comes alive with song. Gibbons are one of the few species of mammals (apart from humans) that have been documented to sing. Male and female pairs have complex vocal interactions that helps maintain pair bonds. Their songs also serve to advertise their presence to other gibbon families in the area. This might not sound very scientific, but I sometimes think gibbons also sing just because they enjoy doing it, much like us humans. What is certain is that the dawn chorus in this part of the world is off to a very good start with gibbon song. After more than an hour of simple duets, they transition into a more bubbling sequence where several individuals call at the same time, occasionally erupting into a strong chorus together. By this time, the dawn chorus is in full force and the rainforest resonates with sound. Bird species join in with their melodious trills and whistles. Nighttime insects are dialing down their calls, and the dawn chorus marks the start of a new day. Happy International Dawn Chorus Day!
