海野宿は、長野県東御市にある江戸時代にあった北国街道の宿場跡。信濃の東側、軽井沢と善光寺門前町を結ぶ北国街道の中間あたりにあった宿駅で、現在も通りの両側に約100棟の家が連なる歴史的な町並みが残っています。この一帯は、平安・鎌倉時代に海野氏の支配する城下町だった場所で、江戸時代に北国街道の宿場町として発展しました。全長約650m、幅10mの旧北国街道の両側には、旅籠屋造り、蚕室造り、茅葺屋根など、当時の面影を残す約100棟の歴史的な建物が今も残っています。 平安末期、治承五年（1181年）に木曽義仲は、海野氏を中心にここ白鳥河原で打倒平家の兵を挙げました。 旧北国街道は、佐渡で採れた金の輸送や、北陸の諸大名が参勤交代で通った道であり、江戸との交通も頻繁で善光寺への参詣客も多かった街道です。この地域の交通の要衝でもあった海野宿は、江戸時代を通して大変な賑わいを呈しました。 往時を偲ぶ建物の屋根には防火壁である「うだつ」が見られ、彫刻が施された出桁（だしげた）が目を引きます。通りの中央には、江戸時代から変わらぬ位置にある「表の川」とよばれる用水堰が流れ、向かい合わせの家ごとに洗い場が設けられ、江戸時代には馬に水を飲ませたり、旅行者が足を洗っていました。 昭和61年（1986年）、情緒漂う宿場町の通りは「日本の道100選」に選出。また、翌年（1987年）には、重要伝統的建造物群保存地区として選定されました。沿道の建物は、毎年3棟ほどの改修作業が行われ、建物保存に力が注がれており、それだけに、いつ訪れても綺麗で散策しやすい環境が維持されています。 重要伝統的建造物群保存地区／旧北国街道宿場町／長野県東御市 ____________________________________________________ Unnojuku is the remains of a post station on the Hokkoku Highway in the Edo period, located in Tomi City, Nagano Prefecture. Unnojuku was located on the east side of Shinano Province, about halfway between Karuizawa and Zenkoji Monzenmachi on the Hokkoku Kaido Road, and even today, the historical townscape with about 100 houses on both sides of the street still remains. This area was a castle town ruled by the Unno clan during the Heian and Kamakura periods, and developed as a post town on the Hokkoku Highway during the Edo period. On both sides of the old Hokkoku Kaido, which is approximately 650 m long and 10 m wide, approximately 100 historical buildings remain, including inns, silkworm houses, and thatched roofs, all of which retain vestiges of those days. In 1181, during the Genpei wars in the late Heian period, Kiso Yoshinaka led the Unno clan in a campaign to overthrow the Heike clan at Shirotori-gawara. The old Hokkoku Kaido Highway was used to transport gold from Sado Island and for feudal lords of the Hokuriku region to and from Edo (present-day Tokyo), and it was also used for frequent transportation to and from Edo, attracting many pilgrims to Zenkoji Temple. As a strategic point of transportation in the area, Unnojuku was very busy throughout the Edo period (1603-1867). The udatsu, or firewalls, can be seen on the roofs of buildings reminiscent of bygone days, and the carved dashigeta (girders) are eye-catching. In the center of the street, a water weir called "Omote-no-gawa" (river at the front), which has been in place since the Edo period, flows through the street, and each house across the street has a washing place where horses were fed and travelers washed their feet. In 1986, the atmospheric post town street was selected as one of the 100 best roads in Japan. The following year (1987), it was also selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. About three buildings along the street are renovated every year, and efforts are made to preserve the buildings. This is the reason why the area remains beautiful and easy to walk around any time of the year.
