This project began with a single slab, 5.5 meters long, 1.30 meters wide, and weighing over 300 kilograms. Cut from a tree older than the Industrial Revolution. More than 200 years of growth, now shaped into a single table. In this film, I document the complete transformation of this massive slab into a finished 5.5 meter single-piece table. The process begins with moving and positioning the 300kg slab in the workshop, a project in itself. To establish a true reference surface, I flatten approximately four meters of the slab using a CNC machine. The remaining length is leveled and refined by hand, blending machine precision with traditional craftsmanship. From there, the work becomes more tactile. I shape and refine the live edges by hand, preserving the natural form of the tree. Structural cracks are stabilized using hand-cut bowtie inlays (butterfly joints), carefully laid out, chiseled, and fitted without templates. Each bowtie is cut and installed entirely by hand — both structural reinforcement and a deliberate design element. The slab is flipped, repositioned, and worked from multiple angles as the surface develops. The base is adjusted and engineered to carry the scale and weight of the piece, then carefully installed beneath the finished top. Final sanding and finishing reveal the depth of the grain, two centuries of growth transformed into functional form.
